Mains Power tools

BLOG POST LAYOUT FOR MAINS POWERED TOOLS

SAFE USE OF  MAINS POWERED TOOLS AND EXTENSION CORDS

Describe/ Explain what is a mains powered power tool?

A mains power tool is a power tool that must be plugged into a wall to work.

Where are you likely to use it?

Most likely used in a workshop or a building site.

Give 3 examples of a mains power tool you may have already used.

Nail Gun

Jigsaw

Heat Gun

Describe/explain the task you used it for.

Nail Gun- Used to drive nails into my wood to hold it together.

Jigsaw- Used to cut shapes and curves in your wood.

Heat Gun- Heat guns are commonly known for their use to strip paint and weld or bend plastics.

General safety around electricity.

Make sure no wires are cut, Keep wires away from heaters or warm appliances.

What to look for. If any of the equipment is broken.

What do I do if something is wrong. Cut the power, turn off electrical appliances.

General hazards and dangers of a mains powered power tool-

What is meant by “RCD” Why is it important- RCD stands for “Residual Current Device”  It is important to have RCD protection when using electrical equipment outdoors.

What is meant by “Double Insulation”- Double or reinforced insulation is another method of protection against electric shock, consisting of an extra layer of supplementary insulation over the basic insulation

Why is it important- Double insulation construction of appliances and tools allows the manufacturer to produce a lower-cost product.

Safety checks and safe working practices when using a mains-powered tool- Make sure it has the safety tag on the cord, Make sure the cord is put somewhere so no one trips over it.

2022 L2 Engineering

Hazards and dangers of extension cords- Tripping hazard, Exposed wires.

Safe Use of extension cords- Always put the cord away when finished with it, unplug it when finished.

General PPE when using mains-powered tools

Signage- Engineering

 Hazard Identification & Action

A hazard can be described as anything that could cause you and others any form of harm.

A hazard that can cause you serious harm is described as significant.

Once a significant hazard has been determined the school must take “all practical steps” to eliminate, isolate or minimise the significant hazard.

Safety Signage

Here are some examples : Identify the sign, Describe what it means ,Explain what action you would take

 Personal Protective Equipment.

What is PPE?

PPE stands for Personal Protective Equipment. This is the type of equipment that you have to use in the workshop

What are the basic requirements for PPE here at the HHS workshop?

The basic requirements include face protection (Glasses and Welding helmet), Ear protection (Ear Muffs), Correct Footwear, Overalls if you’re working around chemicals or dust.

Here is a photo of me in basic PPE

What isn’t PPE?

https://www.shponline.co.uk/ppe-personal-protective-equipment/

Ordinary Clothing, Portable devices, Equipment used for sporting

Who pays for your PPE?

The school pays for it.

Explain the different types/range of basic PPE that is available in the workplace. Headwear, Facewear, Clothing

What are examples of task-specific PPE?

Welding- Welding mask, Overalls.

Bivariate Data Conclusion

Question: Does our class have the perfect body proportion?

 Analysis:

  • Trend: Linear Graph
  • Direction: Increased Data
  • Strength: Moderate
  • Unusual Outliers: 2 pieces of data are unusual.

Conclusion: The answer to our question is yes because there is only 1 student out of the line. This graph that I have made shows that it is Linear, it is moderate and it is positive.

Vitruvian Man

  What is QPVR?

Q- Question

P- Participants

V- Variables

R- Relationships

What is SCCR?

S- Step by Step

C- Controls/ Avoid Mistakes

S- Conditions

R- Repeat Measurements

Problem: Does our class have the perfect body proportion as per Vitruvian man?

My two variables are Height and Armspan

Plan

Q-Do we have the perfect body proportions in this class?

P-Our participants will be the population of Mr Rees year 11 Math class.

V- The explanatory variable is height in meters and the response variable is armspan in meters.

R- Our relationship is to measure the length of our armspan and our height correctly so we get the same measurement.

Subject

Height (Meters)

Armspan (Meters)

What and Who is Vitruvian man?

The Vitruvian Man, a late 15th-century drawing, is a prime example of such work. Intended to explore the idea of proportion, the piece is part work of art and part mathematical diagram, conveying the Old Master's belief that “everything connects to everything else.”

Sawhorse Woodwork

Manufacture of a Sawhorse using Hand tools for my Building Construction  Industry Trades Organization qualification.

In term 1 2021 I learnt how to use hand tools to manufacture a Saw Horse to a specific size from a set of drawings. This took about 6 weeks (24 hrs) I will explain how to make a sawhorse in this blog post

Here is my finished project.

This project was made by using hand tools only. No powered tools were used apart from a battery-powered drill to drill the holes for the screws.

I enjoyed drilling the holes the most because it was interesting trying to get the screws into the holes and not drilling too deep into the wood.

I found marking out the holes for the legs the most difficult part because I was struggling to make them the right size. I overcame this by getting a friend to show me how to do it on his work and then I tried it and it worked.

To make a sawhorse I carried out the following processes.

For this project we had to use a saw, marking gauge, pencil, a sliding bevel, woodwork square, clamps, ruler, plane, vice, chisel, and a hammer.

First, we had to get our pieces of wood and right top and bottom on it and our names. Next, we had to mark out all of our lines on all of our wood including the 15° angle. Then we had to mark outlines on each side of the wood for the legs. Once we marked them out we had to cut little lines in between those lines so that we could use the chisel and hammer to make the holes for the legs. When we finished chiseling out the holes we had to keep a piece of long wood and cut it into four pieces for our legs. Then we had to mark out some lines on the legs to start plaining it so that the legs would fit into the holes.

For the legs to fit we had to plain the bottom part of the leg and then plain the side for it to fit. Once we plained the legs, we had to put them in place and drill them in. When the legs have been drilled in place, we had to cut a piece of wood to go on the bottom of the wood and we drilled them in. At the end of this project, we had to put in the side plates, we drilled the side plates onto the wood and then the project was finished.

Use Identify/describe explain to provide evidence. Please highlight the tools used, how to use them correctly, and any safety tips for tools or any checks to prevent errors.

Include photos  or digital footage at every opportunity

  • Marking out the top.

  • Cutting the joints

  • Hand sawing the leg ends.

  • Marking out / planing the legs

  • Fixing the legs

  • Attaching the end piece and support.
