Bivariate Data Conclusion

Question: Does our class have the perfect body proportion?


 Analysis:

  • Trend: Linear Graph
  • Direction: Increased Data
  • Strength: Moderate 
  • Unusual Outliers: 2 pieces of data are unusual.

Conclusion: The answer to our question is yes because there is only 1 student out of the line. This graph that I have made shows that it is Linear, it is moderate and it is positive.

What and Who is Vitruvian man?

The Vitruvian Man, a late 15th-century drawing, is a prime example of such work. Intended to explore the idea of proportion, the piece is part work of art and part mathematical diagram, conveying the Old Master's belief that “everything connects to everything else.”

Sawhorse Woodwork

 



Manufacture of a Sawhorse using Hand tools for my Building Construction  Industry Trades Organization qualification.


In term 1 2021 I learnt how to use hand tools to manufacture a Saw Horse to a specific size from a set of drawings. This took about 6 weeks (24 hrs) I will explain how to make a sawhorse in this blog post


Here is my finished project.



This project was made by using hand tools only. No powered tools were used apart from a battery-powered drill to drill the holes for the screws.


I enjoyed drilling the holes the most because it was interesting trying to get the screws into the holes and not drilling too deep into the wood.


I found marking out the holes for the legs the most difficult part because I was struggling to make them the right size. I overcame this by getting a friend to show me how to do it on his work and then I tried it and it worked.


To make a sawhorse I carried out the following processes.


For this project we had to use a saw, marking gauge, pencil, a sliding bevel, woodwork square, clamps, ruler, plane, vice, chisel, and a hammer.


First, we had to get our pieces of wood and right top and bottom on it and our names. Next, we had to mark out all of our lines on all of our wood including the 15° angle. Then we had to mark outlines on each side of the wood for the legs. Once we marked them out we had to cut little lines in between those lines so that we could use the chisel and hammer to make the holes for the legs. When we finished chiseling out the holes we had to keep a piece of long wood and cut it into four pieces for our legs. Then we had to mark out some lines on the legs to start plaining it so that the legs would fit into the holes. 


For the legs to fit we had to plain the bottom part of the leg and then plain the side for it to fit. Once we plained the legs, we had to put them in place and drill them in. When the legs have been drilled in place, we had to cut a piece of wood to go on the bottom of the wood and we drilled them in. At the end of this project, we had to put in the side plates, we drilled the side plates onto the wood and then the project was finished.

Bell Curve Graphs

It is important in the field of statistics because they model many real-world data like test results and performance reviews.


"Bell curve" refers to the bell shape that is created when a line is plotted using the data points for an item that meets the criteria of normal distribution.


Look at the symmetrical shape of a bell curve. The center should be where the largest portion of scores would fall.

What are the different types of Graphs

 What are the different types of graphs and their uses?



Bar Graph: A Bar Graph is used to compare things between different groups or to track changes over time. However, when trying to measure change over time, bar

graphs are best when the changes are larger.

 

 

Pie graph: A pie graph can be used to show percentages. A pie chart is a circular statistical graphic, which is divided into slices to illustrate numerical proportion. In a pie chart, the arc length of each slice is proportional to the quantity it represents. Pie charts are best to use when you are trying to compare parts of a whole. They do not show changes over time. 

 

 

Donut Graph: A donut graph is used to show the proportions of data. The donut graph was created using a count of features. Displaying values or percentages in data labels is very useful in a doughnut chart, but if you want to compare the data points side by side, you should use a stacked column or stacked bar chart instead. Consider using a doughnut chart when: You have one or more data series that you want to plot.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Line chart: A line chart is a graphical representation of an asset's historical price action that connects a series of data points with a continuous line. This is the most basic type of chart used in finance, and it typically only depicts a security's closing prices over time. Line graphs are used to track changes over short and long periods of time. When smaller changes exist, line graphs are better to use than bar graphs. Line graphs can also be used to compare changes over the same period of time for more than one group.

 

 

Scatter Graph: A scatter plot’s primary uses are to observe and show relationships between two variables. The dots in a scatter plot represent the values of the data that you have received.

English Work

 Brainstorm: The two were talking. She told him to go away because he didn't belong there. The sees of the sacred tree chose him.

Lighting: Artificial, bright + dim- plants/ things they touched were bright. The background was dim, cold. 

Colour Palette- Neon- Blue/Green/Purple

- Extremes, show us we are someplace different, exciting.

- Camera- Shots, Angles, Movement, Focus

- Tilt Shot- Used to show the seed > POV shot of Jake, exciting, magical

- Conversation- mid-shot- show bodies- shows the distance between the characters.

- Close up- On seeds, shows ethereal movement, otherworldly.

Statement: In the scene 'Seeds of the sacred tree' lighting is effectively used to create the otherworldly experience of Pandora. 

Artificial light is seen as the figures run and touch things in the environment. The rest of their surroundings remain dark against these flashes of cold neon light.

This makes the audience feel amazed and envious of the unnatural and unearthly qualities of the planet.

The director did this to make the viewer feel like they have been transported to another world where new and exciting things are possible.

Coinciding with this is the use of a neon colour palette. The blues, greens and purples become vibrant and otherworldly when combined with the artificial, bright lights caused by movement.

The lighting and colour a juxtaposed to that which we experience in the real world. Like earth, it has trees, plants and native people but they have seen vastly different from us because of the bright artificial neon lighting and colours.

Brainstorm: She tumbled down the stairs and then the door closed on her.

Brainstorm: A fox wants to buy a jumbo pop from the elephant store but they won't sell it to him. The bunny officer steps in to help.

Colour: Bright- heartening scene. aimed at children so is colourful + engaging.

Lighting- Warm, natural, bright- daytime, hot sunny day, fox, bunny, spotlighting

Camera- high/low angles- the elephant is taller, feels bigger, superior, we aren't meant to like the elephant because he won't serve them- rough angry tone, the low angle from Fox POV + High angle down onto fox makes him look small.

Music/Sound- Baby fox trumpets

Statement: In the 'Popsicle' scene low angle shots are used to show the imbalance of power between characters.

Evidence: We see this when the elephant is talking to the fox. The low angle shot is used to show how much bigger and more imposing the elephant is than the fox.

X- Audience- This makes the audience feel sad for the fox because he is being refused service because of his size.

X- Director- The purpose of this is to introduce the idea of stereotyping to the viewer. Appearing large and rough, the elephant shopkeeper refuses service because he is a fox. Strengthening this idea is the elephant's quote 'go back to your side of town'.

x- Other technique- Combined with the use of low angle shots, we see the differences in the characters rather than the similarities. The high angle point of view makes the fox seem even smaller than the elephant towering over him.

Link- Issues like this where people are judged on their size, race or religion are not isolated to this film. In the real world, we tackle ongoing issues of discrimination in every country, even in 2021.

Lord of the Rings

Brainstorm: 4 hobbits are hiding under a tree from the Black Rider. They are afraid.- see on their faces.

Technique- Colour- Palette- Green, Black, Grey, Dark, Nature/Natural, Dull, feels cold + uninviting

Camera: Shots, Focus, Movement, Angles- tilt shot- from the rider to the hiding hobbits, close-ups- hobbit faces- scared, nervous, bugs- crawling across the hobbits, shows how difficult it was to keep still + quiet. Three close-ups on parts of the rider- The horses hooves pawing the ground, the horses muzzle with red-eye and the rider's feet hitting the ground. Builds suspense before we see the rider. Low angle- looking up at the rider, shows hobbits cowering below, makes the rider look bigger, intimidating and frightening.

Lighting- Natural, dim, cold- make it feel cold + uninviting.

Sound/Music- Diegetic sounds- the horses hooves approaching, bugs crawling, birds, Black Rider's armour, the sound of breathing. Little sounds are magnified when we are afraid.

Statement: In the 'Black Rider' scene close-ups are used to show the fear of the characters as they hide.

Evidence: The four hobbits are running from the Black Rider. They seek refuge in under the roots of an old tree as the rider approaches. Close ups show us the expressions of fear on the hobbits faces.

X- Audience- This makes us feel intimidated and anxious with the hobbits as the unseen enemy approaches.

X- Director- The purpose of this is to build suspense before we see the rider. Like the characters, we are afraid even though we don't know what is coming.

X- Other technique- Combined with close-ups is the use of diegetic sounds including the horses hooves on the ground, the sound of the breathing of the rider and the clinking of his armour as he dismounted. These sounds add to the feeling of fear we have seen through the close up shots.

Real world connection- Interestingly, most viewers have felt the fear of being chased and found before. This allows them to connect with the emotions of the characters in this moment.

Good Boys

Brainstorm: Lucas, Max and Thor try to sell a rare card that they packed off a game for money to buy a drone. The guy that wants to buy the card off of them is a bit weird and asked to buy their CPR doll instead. The kids sell the doll and get their money to buy the drone.

Camera- Low angle shot- used to show the height difference between the kids and the adult.

Statement: In the 'Selling Card' scene low angle shot is used to show that there is a height difference between the characters.

Evidence: We see this when Lucas and Claude make a deal for the card. The low angle shot is used to show that Claude is much bigger than Lucas and he can overpower him.

X- Audience- This makes us feel worried for the kids because we never know what can happen or what the man can do to them.

X- Director- The purpose of this is to show the viewers that because someone is taller than you that you shouldn't be scared of what they can do to you. 

X- Other technique- Combined with the use of low angle shots, we see the difference in the characters rather than their similarities. The high angle point of view makes the kids look even smaller than the adult.

Workshop on Themes

 Theme/Idea > the ideas the story centers around.

> Message we are trying to convey to the audience

> Tolerance > the quality of allowing other people to have their own attitudes, beliefs, or to behave in a particular way, even if you don't agree or approve.

Overcoming Adversity > pushing past/ getting through something difficult or dangerous.

Overcoming Adversity > The students don't respect or have a relationship with their teacher. They don't understand each other.

> They aren't in a headspace to learn because they don't feel safe- bring guns to school, mock each other, no tolerance for each other

Andre- "Why should I give you my respect? Because you're a teacher? I don't know you. How do I know your not a liar standing up there."

Marcus- "Lady, I'm lucky if I make it to 18, we in a war! We graduating every day we live because we ain't afraid to die protecting our own."

Shallow Focus- Focuses us on a part of an image + blurs the rest. Tells the viewer where their attention is needed.

Deep Focus- Everything in the image is sharp + clear

In the Holocaust scene, shallow focus is used to show the theme of tolerance. For instance, we see a picture being passed around the room until it reaches Jamal. The picture is a stereotype of an African American with big lips and has Jamal's name on it. When he receives it, Jamal puts his hat back on and shrinks into his chair. Shallow focus is used to bring our attention to the picture and its effect on Jamal. This makes us understand that the picture was used to bully and embarrass Jamal. The director did this to help us empathise with the characters and gain an insight into what their lives are like. Coinciding with this is the use of costume- in this case, Jamal's hat. When Jamal puts the hat on, it symbolises that he wants to hide away and not be seen. This scene introduces the viewer to the theme of tolerance because we can see that currently the students do not respect each other's cultures, beliefs, or identities. This makes students like Jamal feel unsafe in class.

Close up shot

Costume- Hat- Symbol of hiding

Angles- High/Low- shows power/Dominance

Lighting- dim/bright- Shows emotion e.g Jamal overwhelmed

Close up/mid shots- Teacher in midshot, Students close up, we feel the distance between the students + the teachers.

Tolerance: The ability to put up with others beliefs, attitudes + culture even when you don't agree/ it's different from your own.

Overcoming Adversity: Pushing through something difficult or dangerous.

In the Holocaust, Close up shots are used to show the emotions of the students and make us see from their perspective. For instance, we see Jamal shrink down into himself and tries not to be noticed. 

Brainstorm: A student read his diary to the teacher + the class. His family has been evicted. He feels at home at school in room 203 with Ms Gruwell and the students. Overcoming Adversity- he has come to school despite being evicted.

Music- Slow, Soft, Sad

Lighting- bright, Natural- creates an atmosphere of a warm, happy, welcome space.

Camera- close up when he says he's home- shows the audience his emotion

Dolly shot- from close up to mid shot back to close up shows the viewer that the student is surrounded, supported by his classroom family.

Shallow focus- Speaker is in sharp, those around are blurred to make him the focus, most important

Brainstorm: Miep Gies was telling the students about what happened on August 4th and how she had to hide Anne Frank + her family. Marcus stands up and tells her that she is his hero. Miep Gies says that they are the heroes. 

Camera- Pan shot- Used ti show all the students are there and they are all focused + listening not distracted like previous scenes.

Lighting- Bright, cold, natural- Backlit- Creates a halo effect making her seen angelic or god-like. This works because the students see Miep as a god because she saved the Franks.

Music- Subtle quiet, builds in volume + intensity, used to heighten the viewer's emotions.

In the 'I am home' scene shallow focus is used to show how the character overcame adversity. It showed us how he overcame a difficult situation by telling his classroom his secret.

In the 'you are the heroes' scene close up shot is used to show the emotions of the character and the way she would speak she sounded

Mean, Median and Mode

Who invented Median: Francis Galtons was the person to invent median.

Who invented Mode: Karl Pearson was the person to invent mode.

Who invented Mean: The term is first found in the mid-1690s in the writings of Edmund Halley.

What does Median mean?
The middle value of a range of values.

What does Mode mean?
The mode is the value that appears most frequently in a data set. A set of data may have one mode, more than one mode, or no mode at all.

What does Mean mean?
The mean (average) of a data set is found by adding all numbers in the data set and then dividing by the number of values in the set.

Why do we use Median?
The mean value of numerical data is without a doubt the most commonly used statistical measure. Sometimes the median is used as an alternative to the mean. ... Just like the mean value, the median also represents the location of a set of numerical data by means of a single number.

Why do we use Mode?
Mode is most useful as a measure of central tendency when examining categorical data, such as models of cars or flavors of soda, for which a mathematical average median value based on ordering can not be calculated.

Why do we use Mean?
The mean can be used to get an overall idea, or picture, of the data set. Mean is best used for a data set with numbers that are close together. The median can be used to get an idea of what values fall above the midpoint and what values fall below the midpoint.


A real life example of Median?
The number of students in a school, the amount of money an average citizen in a town earns, or the temperature for your vacation destination, are all numbers that are important in everyday life.


A real life example of Mode?
One of the factory owners lives in the town and his salary is in the millions of dollars. If you use a measure like the average to try to compare salaries in the town as a whole, the owner's income would severely throw off the numbers. This is where the measure of mode can be useful in the real world.

A real life example of Mean?
The mean is often used in research, academics and in sports. When you watch a baseball game and you see the player's batting average, that number represents the total number of hits divided by the number of times at bat. In other words, that number is the mean.

How to work out the volume

How to work out the volume?


What do we mean by volume?

the amount of space that a substance or object occupies or that is enclosed within a container.


How do we measure it?

In math, the volume is the amount of space in a certain 3D object. For example, a fish tank has 3 feet in length, 1 foot in width, and two feet in height. To find the volume, you multiply length times width times height, which is 3x1x2, which equals six. So the volume of the fish tank is 6 cubic feet.


Is there a conversion to liters?

A liter is a cubic decimetre, which is the volume of a cube 10 centimeters × 10 centimeters × 10 centimeters (1 L ≡ 1 dm3 ≡ 1000 cm3). Hence 1 L ≡ 0.001 m3 ≡ 1000 cm3 and 1 m3 (i.e. a cubic meter, which is the SI unit for volume) is exactly 1000 L.


The volume of a rectangle

To find the volume of a rectangle, multiply its 3 dimensions: length x width x height. The volume is expressed in cubic units.


The volume of a cylinder

A cylinder's volume is π r² h, and its surface area is 2π r h + 2π r²


The volume of a prism 

-Volume of a rectangular prism = (length x width x height) cubic units. V = (l x w x h) cubic units


The volume of a barrel

When used to denote a volume, one barrel is exactly 42 US gallons and is easily converted to any other unit of volume

I know that 1m3= 1000L

There is a trailer of barrels

Each barrel is 1.5m high with a diameter or 0.75m

How much weight is on the trailer?

Basic tools in Woodwork


 Carpenter Pencil: 

  • Identify- 
  • Describe- The pencil is thick but flat.
  • Explain- It is used to mark out your work.

Marking Gauge:

Identify- 

Describe- There is a long piece of wood with a nail in it and then there is a square shaped piece of wood attached around the long piece and there is a handle to tighten or loosen it.

Explain- A marking gauge is used in woodworking to mark out lines for cutting.


Combination Square:

Identify-    

Describe- It's a ruler with a bubble level.

Sliding Bevel:

Explain- combination square is a multi-purpose measuring and marking tool used in metalworking.

Sliding Bevel:

Describe- There is a piece of wood with a metal part.

Explain- sliding bevel, also known as a bevel gauge or false square is an adjustable gauge for setting and transferring angles.


Woodworkers set square:

Describe- It's a piece of wood with a metal piece shaped like a ruler and the metal is attached to the wood.

Explain- The set square is one of the most important tools used in making furniture. It is used for marking out right angles before any joint is cut.
