Sugar Crystals

Yesterday in science we made some sugar crystals.

Ingredients: Food colouring, Sugar, Water.

Equipment: Popsicle sticks, Beakers, Gauze mat, Heating mat, Tripod, Bunsen Burner, Gas tap, Stirring Rod.

Method: 1. Pour approximately 50 ml of water into a 250 ml beaker,
              2. Pour 250g of sugar into a beaker. Bit by bit. 
              3. Light the Bunsen burner with the beaker on the tripod.
              4. Once the water was boiling we turned off the Bunsen burner.
              5. After we turned the Bunsen burner off, we started stirring the sugar with a stirring rod.
              6. Once we finished stirring we poured the syrup into plastic cups.
              7. We then coated the Popsicle sticks with the left over sugar and put them into the syrup.
              8. Once we done that we left them on the windowsill overnight.  

I learnt that if you put in too much water it will stay as a liquid and if you add too much sugar then it won't set properly. Making Crystals can separate a solid from a liquid. A highly concentrated solution was needed ( Saturated Solution) in order to grow Crystals.

Science Work

1. A Crystal is a solid Material made out of silicon dioxide molecules.

2. Dissolve the sugar in the boiling water, add a few drops of food colouring and flavor, if desired. Allow the solution to cool a bit before pouring it into your jar. Pour the sugar solution into a jar. Place the container somewhere it won't be disturbed.

3. You have removed the water from the crystals so you completely get rid of the water.
