Here is a list of expectations that you should follow.
- Sit on the floor instead of a table
- Take off your shoes in the whare
- To make it tidy, eat outside the whare
- Laying down on a mattress is better than standing or jumping
- Be responsible for your belongings and keep your area tidy
- Respect the elders
- Walk around people to try avoiding walking over their legs
- If someone asks to save a seat, give it to someone else
- Wash your hands after you leave a cemetery
- Say grace before eating
- Instead of passing food over someone’s head, stand up and give it to the person
- When your in the whare walk
The proper name for whare is called wharenui, people just say whare for short.
A powhiri is a welcoming ceremony where people talk, dance, sing and at the end they're is a hongi.
